Starkey’s 10 Sci-Fi Movies That Can Watched At Any Time
This isn’t necessarily a top 10 list, but a list of 10 sci-fi movies that I enjoy and I’m always up for watching. Anyone who’s followed my music, or read any interviews, knows I’m really into sci-fi movies.
10 – Life of Pi (2012)
This has to be for me the most surprising movie of all time. I went into it thinking it was going to be absolutely horrible. (That’s why it’s on this list.) Most people have probably seen it by now, and it’s just a really solid fantastical story. I’m not sure if I like it because I thought it was going to be awful… maybe that plays into it a little. But it’s making this list still.
09 – Wall-E (2008)
It’s arguably the best Pixar movie. The character development of Wall-E and Eve is pretty slick when you think about the fact that they are robots. The usage of the Hello Dolly footage and music is great. And the film makes you want to eat healthy and do a workout, so it’s inspiring. ha.
08 – Perfect Sense (2011)
A love story, yes, but equally sci-fi. This one I think went under the radar a bit. I don’t know a lot of people who have seen it. Basically, (spoiler alert) everyone starts losing all their senses, one at a time. And you see this couple and society as a whole, dealing with this situation. It’s pretty dark at times and the way they tell the story is really well done.
07 – Sunshine (2007)
Probably the most underrated sci-fi movie of all time. It was directed by Danny Boyle and stars Cillian Murphy in this sick space tale about saving the Earth from a dying sun. It gets all Event Horizon towards the end, with people going mental from staring at the sun and dealing with the long journey in space. It’s sick. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you do.
06 – Cloud Atlas (2012)
I love all the Wachowski’s movies, except for their first one which I didn’t make it the full way through. (Yes, I even like Speed Racer.) This is the most epic usage of Tom Hanks since the Polar Express… and it’s a great balance of story-telling, action and drama with great computer graphics.
05 – Logan’s Run (1976)
The costumes are cliche 1970’s scifi, but the story is one of those great dystopian futures (sort of) gone awry. Goldsmith’s score is great and fitting as well. Really like the Planet of the Apes nods in the 2nd half of the film as well.
04 – Inception (2010)
Leonardo DiCaprio is probably my favorite actor, Christopher Nolan’s story telling is probably some of the weirdest and makes you think a lot, (spoiler alert) the 3rd dream is like some James Bond snow mobile action. WHAT?? This one takes a couple times through to catch everything, so that’s why you can watch it anytime. You get the plot more with repeat viewings.
03 – District 9 (2009)
Honestly, one of the most surprising films. I loved all the cool online promo they had going, but thought the movie would not hold up to the hype. But it was such a huge surprise. Sharito Copley was amazing and they made subtitles with aliens work.
02 – Minority Report (2002)
Stephen Spielberg had his best year ever in 2002 (imo) ….with Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can coming out. Both are probably my favorite movies of his…. which probably most people won’t agree with. They’re making a TV show based on the story behind Minority Report, I hope it’s ok.
01 – 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
It’s the best and I’m always up for watching it. I just recently got the new BluRay of it and it looks amazing; like watching a new movie all over again.
